Cast
A downloadable Spite Instrument
Cast One button, and a whole idea arrives. Press it again and it's gone forever.
Really this is a device to be sampled, grab a cool idea and make something cool with your sp404 or whatever cool device. I got tariffed pretty hard on a different ... "device" and so i got upset and they didnt make me feel better, so this is a spite instrument. They could have just been nicer.... they could have just been nicer........ anyways i will get off my soapbox.
Press AUX and Cast rolls a complete piece of music: a root, a scale, a tempo, and four tracks. Each track gets its own engine, its own Euclidean rhythm, its own melodic contour, its own octave, level, pan, decay and filter, all in one key. It might be a slow low drone, a fast bright pattern, something sparse and bell-like, or a thicket. Press again and that one is gone. Nothing is saved, nothing comes back. Stop playing and start listening.
The keys choose the key. Press one and the whole cast moves there on the spot, mid-note, and every cast after it arrives in your key.
K1 goes further than tempo knobs usually do. At the bottom it slows to one step every 4 seconds, single tones with room around them, slow enough to sample one clean. Through the middle it runs from 40 to 300 bpm. At the top it keeps speeding up past 1000 steps a second, until the rhythm stops being a rhythm and turns into a tone. It answers mid-step, so turning it during a long step speeds that step up right there. Warp the whole thing on a wobbly reel with K2, open it from a muffled thump through the wall to everything with K3, and at the top of K4 a second reverb fades in with a tail over 20 seconds long, so a lone tone hangs in the air.
Controls
- AUX: cast a new piece (the old one is gone)
- Keys: the key it plays in. Moves at once, and stays for every cast after
- K1 Tempo: a step every 4 s → 40–300 bpm → audio rate
- K2 Wow & Flutter: from clean, to a gentle drift, to seasick
- K3 Open: a resonant filter over all four tracks, 110 Hz to 12 kHz
- K4 Reverb: an echo reverb, with a long tail at the top (about 7 to 22 seconds)
The screen shows the key and the tempo: seconds per step down low, bpm in the middle, Hz up in audio rate.
Install: copy the Cast folder into Patches on your Organelle. No wifi, no scripts. Works on the Organelle's stock Pure Data.
