Glass
A downloadable Instrument
Glass A singing bowl for the Organelle M. Strike it, rub it, let it ring. Someone is talking in the next room.
Every key is a singing bowl. Tap a key and the mallet strikes. Hold it and the leather rubs the rim: the bowl sings up out of nothing and keeps singing for as long as you hold. Let go and it rings out for a long time; a struck bowl takes about 35 seconds to fade. Six bowls at once, in a room that goes from a large hall to almost endless.
Like a real bowl, it doesn't always behave. Hold on long enough and your hand gets tired: the pressure wavers and the pitch starts to wander. Press too hard and the stick chatters against the rim before the song settles again. Now and then a ringing bowl slips on its cushion, a few cents flat for a moment. Four more bowls sit on a shelf across the room and hum along faintly with anything you play that they're in tune with. Each is a few cents off true, so the unisons shimmer. Every bowl you let go of goes back on that shelf, so after a while the shelf is made of what you've been playing.
And through the wall, two people are talking. You catch the rhythm of it, a phrase, someone answering, but never a word. Every minute or two the door opens a crack and they're a little clearer, then it swings shut with a soft thud.
Controls
- Keys: a bowl on every key, an octave down. Tap to strike, hold to rub. 6 voices
- K1 Strike: how hard the mallet hits, from not at all (just the rub singing up) to loud and bright
- K2 Bend: an octave down to an octave up, gliding, with an easy-to-find in-tune spot in the middle. It bends everything that's sounding, even the shelf. The people next door don't bend.
- K3 Sing: how strongly the leather makes the bowl sing
- K4 Room: a large hall to almost endless
- AUX tap: Silence. A hand on every bowl while the room keeps ringing
- AUX hold: turns next door on or off
The screen shows what the bowls are doing: singing, the hand is tiring, ringing out, silenced.
Install: copy the Glass folder into Patches on your Organelle. No wifi, no scripts. Works on the Organelle's stock Pure Data.
