Seep
A downloadable instrument
Seep is a microtonal drone synth for the Critter & Guitari Organelle M.
⚠ It is tuned in quarter tones — 24 notes to the octave, not 12. The whole keyboard spans a single octave, and every adjacent pair of keys is a half-semitone apart. If you're expecting standard tuning this will sound wrong; if you want intervals that beat and shimmer against each other, that's the entire point. Some people love this. Some people really don't. Now you know before you download it.
Eight independent voices, each with its own comb filter and feedback path, feeding a very long reverb.
The knobs
K1 — Attack. 20 ms to 12 seconds. At the long end, notes take so long to arrive that they're a compositional decision rather than a performance one. Good for film work where something bad is about to happen.
K2 — Release. 100 ms to 8 seconds.
K3 — Feedback. The dangerous one. Below roughly a third of the way up, notes decay. Above that, the combs self-oscillate and keep going on their own. Push it.
K4 — Tone. Lowpass, 200 Hz to 8 kHz.
AUX — Reverb. Short press toggles a seven-second reverb tail. Hold for a second and it's a panic — all eight voices release immediately. Useful, because at high feedback a note can genuinely get away from you.
How to use it
Play two adjacent keys. That's a quarter tone, and the beating between them is the instrument's core sound. Then hold a cluster and bring K3 up until it stops decaying.
Both knobs at zero — fast attack, fast release — gives short plucked grains scattering through the reverb, which is a completely different instrument from the same patch.
